Giving as we have received to help those in need

Transforming Families…and Furniture!

HutchGB Although your patronage to Graceful Buys funds a large portion of our budget, another perk to shopping at one of our resale locations is the thrill of the hunt! We’re not only okay with that—we take pride in our unique home décor and furniture that can be purchased for a fraction of what you would pay retail. There’s something for every savvy shopper, and nothing is more invigorating than a DIY project. With GRACEful Buys’ new weekly shipments, now is the perfect time to turn a bargain find into a high-end piece of furniture! There are endless options and finishes to choose from, and small cosmetic choices like designer nobs or beveled adhesive mirrors can transform a chest of drawers from retro to glam. A new coat of paint and some wooden embellishments can make a Colonial style hutch look French country, and some polyurethane and stain can completely upgrade a dull looking coffee table.

What makes a DIY furniture project so empowering is its ability restore a piece that may have endured troubling times. In some small way, GRACE sets out to do the same thing: to provide the tools necessary to strengthen and renew, and make beautiful again.

Whatever your style is, a Saturday morning and a can of spray paint can completely transform a GRACEful Buys piece! If you haven’t been lately, come by GRACEful Buys and see what we have to offer. Have a transformed piece you purchased from GRACEful Buys? Send it to us, and it may be featured in an upcoming publication! Email your before and after to

Meet David Mowers

David Mowers2

GRACE is proud to welcome David Mowers as the new Director of Resale Operations. David takes over for Debbie Haley who retired after 21 years of service to GRACE.

David brings more than a decade of experience in charitable resale, but for the past year he has been molding young minds at the Grand Island (NE) Christian School.

As the principal and chief development officer, David not only directed all school operations including budget/property management and staffing, he also managed all the school’s fundraising events and direct solicitation campaigns.

David’s extensive experience with resale came as a captain in The Salvation Army.

David attended The Salvation Army College for Officer Training from 2002-2004, and graduated with honors and a commission as a captain in Spring 2004. He served as a ministry intern in the Philippines for two months before returning to his first assignment as Agency Director of the Mitchell, South Dakota operations.

In Mitchell, David managed all operations of The Salvation Army including the youth after school program, hot meal program, food pantry, rent/utility assistance, youth character building programs, church program, disaster services, fundraising/development and, of course, the thrift store.

His second assignment was to The Salvation Army in Aberdeen, South Dakota. There he exceeded the Christmas Giving campaign (Red Kettle) goals by 46% and increased the thrift store revenues to $500,000 per year.

In June 2008, David took his final assignment for the Salvation Army in Grand Island, NE. In five years there, he nearly doubled the Christmas Giving campaign from $120,000 per year to $230,000, and led a project to remodel The Salvation Army facility, bringing in $1.9 million in capital improvement funding.

At GRACE, David oversees a robust resale program that grossed nearly $1.47 million in 2013. Net revenues from resale cover nearly one-quarter of the budget for GRACE programs and services. His purview includes both resale stores, GRACEfulBuys and Style& GRACE, and the collection facility, Donation Station.

College Finds at GRACEful Buys

College Move-In Day is coming right up! Before you know it, the apple of your eye will be heading to, in no particular order, College Station, Austin, Lubbock and elsewhere.

Not to be disheartening, but for the next nine months or so, most of your kids’ homes will be four cinderblock walls, a bunk bed, two desks, two chairs and a roommate.

GRACEful Buys has some nice—and inexpensive—options to make dorm rooms a bit more homey and better organized.

dorm room items

Size and storage is a constant issue in most dorm rooms. We have tons of cabinets and drawer units that will fit perfectly in small corners, desk-side and under beds. Our selection of bookshelves ranges from floor models to sets of shelves that can fit on top of desks or used as headboards/footboards for beds.

Artwork for nearly every taste lines our store and can add a touch of home to bare dorm room walls. And if the subject matter of the artwork isn’t exactly inspiring to your student, at least the nice frames can be repurposed with pictures of mom and dad.

We have rugs, curtains, lamps, throw pillows, kitsch, and an array of bowls, boxes and tchotchke galore that can be catch-alls for keys, coins, calculators and cell phones.

Speaking of electronics, our back room is filled with TVs, radios and stereo components—all checked out and working perfectly.

So before your scholar heads off to college, head over to GRACEful Buys, 418 East Northwest Highway in Grapevine. We’re open Monday through Friday, 9:30 a.m. – 7 p.m., Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. – 6:30 p.m., and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.

Assistance Needed at Resale Operations

Volunteers are an essential part of the success of GRACE programs and activities. Last year, nearly 50,000 volunteer hours were served by individual volunteers and groups. Although there are a variety of volunteer opportunities at GRACE, the current need for volunteers is the greatest at Donation Station, GRACEful Buys and Style & GRACE.

GRACE operates a successful resale program that funds a large portion of the annual budget. We receive so many donations from our community that the supply is often greater than the client demand. However, our manpower for accepting and sorting through donations is often insufficient. Donations are received and sorted at Donation Station, and then distributed to GRACE programs. Items not needed for specific programs are taken to GRACEful Buys, our upscale resale store, or Style & GRACE, our boutique for women’s designer fashions.

Sabre group 1

Currently, Donation Station needs volunteers to unload cars and trucks, move donations into the Station, and size, sort, organize and tag items. Regular volunteers are needed in the clothing department throughout the week, Monday through Saturday. A volunteer is needed in the accessories department on Tuesdays, and in the linen department on Tuesdays and Fridays. Strong, capable individuals who do not mind heavy lifting are needed on Saturdays and Mondays, the site’s busiest days, to unload and reload donations, as well as take items to the warehouse for storage.

GRACEful Buys needs assistance during designated sales and on Fridays and Saturdays in particular. Volunteers are needed for front-of-the-store operations, such as stocking racks and shelves, organizing clothing, bagging assistance behind the register and customer service.  Strong volunteers are needed for back-of-the-store operations, including heavy lifting and unloading.

Style and GRACE has a need for volunteers to steam, tag and hang clothes on Mondays and Tuesdays. Volunteers are needed on Fridays to prepare the store for weekend shoppers, and volunteers are needed on Saturdays to greet customers, assist customers with fitting rooms, return clothes to racks, bag clothing, and restock home décor. If a volunteer enjoys working at Style & Grace, the volunteer may be trained to operate the cash register after an initial three week trial period. Customer service-oriented individuals over the age of 15 are encouraged to volunteer at Style & GRACE.

If you or your group is interested in volunteering at GRACE, contact our Volunteer Manager, Lara Sundell at 817-305-4653 or
