The Grapevine Police Department published a media release on Wednesday that is included below. We wanted to make sure our GRACE family is aware of this information as you are volunteering for GRACE programs in the vicinity of the reports made to Police. The safety of our clients and our volunteers is extremely important to us.
GRACE CEO, Shonda Schaefer, reached out to the Chief of Police, Mike Hamlin, who assured us that unless and until they contact us directly, they feel that our programs are safe to continue. The Grapevine Police Department is increasing its patrol efforts and you may see them patrolling the areas where you will be serving GRACE clients. They have asked that you increase your awareness of your surroundings and that if you observe anything suspicious, please contact the police immediately and then also contact a GRACE representative. Lori Steven’s and Shonda Schaefer’s cell phone numbers are listed below. This is a good time to remember basic safety rules like traveling in pairs which is always a good idea.
We intentionally take safety measures for our volunteers and clients very seriously. We appoint a Site Manager for each volunteer site. We run background checks and train this individual to be the eyes and ears of our site. We take precautions to assure that no volunteers are left alone with clients, and strongly emphasize following our safety suggestions such as volunteers not walking children home from our Feed Our Kids sites.
Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Grapevine Police Search for Man Attacking Women
GRAPEVINE, Texas – Grapevine Police are searching for a Hispanic man targeting females primarily along Mustang Drive. Surveillance video of the most recent assault may help police identify the suspect. The video shows the suspect grabbing a victim and carrying her into a breezeway.
All of the victims were able to fight off the suspect, but in one case, a woman’s collarbone was broken in her struggle to escape.
Investigators are working at least five separate cases where a man exposed himself or physically grabbed women. The crimes happened from April 8, 2019 and July 9, 2019, primarily at complexes between the 2800 and 3000 blocks of Mustang Drive.
The man is described as Hispanic, in his early twenties, with short, curly black hair, a thin build, and between 5’3” and 5’8”. Grapevine Police are working with a sketch artist and one victim to create a sketch of the suspect. The sketch will be made public once it is complete.
Grapevine Police praise each victim for getting away and reporting the crimes. Officers are actively patrolling the neighborhood and urge women to keep close watch of their surroundings, travel in pairs when possible, and call 911 immediately if they see anything suspicious. Anyone with information on the suspect should call Criminal Investigations during business hours at: 817.410.3200 or 817.410.8127 after hours.
There simply isn’t enough to say about how the Thompson Group at Classic Chevrolet has made this community a better place. For twelve consecutive years, The Thompson Group has been the Presenting Sponsor of the GRACE Gala, among other charitable events hosted by Classic Chevrolet throughout the year.
This post is the first of many to highlight those who have linked arms with GRACE to accomplish the mission of providing compassionate services to those facing crisis through event sponsorship. In particular, Ken Thompson and the team at The Thompson Group at Classic Chevrolet have been steadfast, instrumental partners not only with our agency, but with the city of Grapevine and Greater Northeast Tarrant County.
They host their Classic Chevrolet Golf Tournament each year which divides its proceeds between seven local charities from the Classic Employee Charity Fund, with a matching dollar for dollar gift from Classic owners Tom and Susan Durant.
Local businesses and civic groups craft a variety of homemade chili, from southwest flair to a beer broth, during Classic’s Annual Chili Cook Off each fall. Non-perishable food is collected at the event to stock the GRACE Food Pantry.
Their newest annual charity fundraising event, the 5K de Mayo Social Run, began in 2018. Participants enjoy the beautiful race scenery that winds through Big Bear Creek and Parr Park while also enjoying the fact that their registration fee doe to a great cause. Classic owners Tom and Susan Durant again contribute a donation that match the total registration fees collected.
In every season at GRACE, the Thompson Group and Classic Chevrolet have instilled an employee culture of giving, which is reflected in their generous Classic Employee Fund and charitable events.
This type of dedication speaks of a generous, resolute corporate culture that recognizes goals and develops ways to meet those goals. “We encourage our employees to push themselves to achieve not only our company goals, but their own personal goals as well,” says Thompson, “giving back to the community has become incredibly important and fulfilling for the entire organization.”
GRACE is so very blessed and thankful to have the support of the Thompson Group at Classic Chevrolet again as the 2019 GRACE Gala presenting sponsor!

GRACE is proud to announce and brag on three of our hardworking clients – Neve, Jennifer and Rita. These ambitious ladies were chosen as recipients of the Kathee Livengood Scholarship!
The Kathee Livengood Memorial Scholarship program is an integral part of the Grapevine Chamber Foundation, providing financial assistance to women that needed assistance to attend a trade or vocational school or further their education to redirect their lives and provide a better future for them and their children.
Our client, Neve, would like to become a paralegal, and is currently deciding which program she would like to attend. Jennifer will be attending TCC for her veterinary technician administration certification. Rita will be taking pre-requisites to attend medical or sonography school.
Our client, Dominique Johnson, was previously chosen as a recipient of the scholarship, and attributes the honor and opportunity as life-changing.
“I can finally see my dreams becoming a reality. Words could never express how appreciative I am to receive the necessary funding to further my education; which in return will better my future. I’m a single mom but now I have the necessary skills to provide efficiently for my daughter. Again, thank you and whenever you see me on a local billboard, business flyer or news broadcasting remember you opened the window of opportunity.”
Over the last 7 years, the KL Memorial Scholarship Fund has awarded 30 KL Scholarships to ladies attending TCC, 11 to UTA, 8 to Parker University, 6 to Kings University, 4 to Concorde University and 35 to various technical schools and universities.
In 2019, they have awarded $17,448 in KL Scholarships to18 women who are working hard to
complete their education. The KL scholarship program is grateful for the support that enables them to help these women improve their lives through education.
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to the recipients, and are eager to see what each of these women accomplish!
Kathee Livengood was a successful Realtor but found the time to belong to, or support, almost every civic organization and cause in Grapevine. She was known as the “Beer Diva” for supervising the Chamber beer booths and she was the expert everyone went to for help with auctions.
Kathee worked at every Main Street Days Festival and every GrapeFest until her death. Over the years her passion for helping people was instrumental in raising thousands of dollars to assist the elderly and children through GRACE and the Women’s Division, people injured and disabled through the Joey Wilkins Foundation and anyone who was touched by cancer by founding the Relay for Life event in Grapevine.
Kathee, Grapevine’s #1 volunteer, passed in May of 2012 and several of her friends wanted to find a special way to honor her. She had no children and no close relatives to help preserve her legacy with a scholarship. The program was created in the intention of being different from the usual good grades, financial need type for college students.
We hope everyone had a spectacular Fourth of July! GRACE Family, you are firecrackers! You light up our community with your actions.
Let’s keep the flame of liberty and hope burning high and bright. Let’s revel in the spirit of fraternity each day and night. Let peace be the one and only way, through which we accomplish every aim.
Let us never forget the sweat, toil and sacrifices of the brave souls that fought and served for the pride and peace of our nation. Let’s celebrate our heroes for all the incredible sacrifices they made to bring us this holiday and our liberty.
As we celebrate our freedom, let us remember those who laid down their lives for us, taking time to remember those who worked hard to ensure a better future for us. Independence is the most precious gift one can enjoy. Take time and understand what independence means to you.
This holiday let’s pay homage to the souls whose sacrifices have made this day a reality. We hold steadfast the prayer to craft beautiful tomorrows for ourselves and our neighbors. Let’s make a promise to lead our communities, cities and nation on a path of prosperity & peace.
We thank you for the sacrifices and work you freely give to our people, our organization and our mission to ensure independence, hope and freedom for others. Let’s continue to burn brightly, continue to count our blessings, continue to appreciate our freedom, and continue to give!
Tannie Jenkins will be the first to tell you the integral role our retail store, GRACEful Buys, plays in making her elegant house the warm, inviting home that it truly is. She is so passionate about the blessing that GRACE has been in her life, she feels hers is a story that should be told. Her home is one to be experienced in person in order to fully understand her talent and fervor. Fortunately for everyone, she invited GRACE for an intimate look into her sanctuary.
This delightful woman exudes love from her core, and a lot of that love is for GRACE and GRACEful Buys. In conversation, our friend estimates that about 80% of her Southlake home’s furnishings came from GRACE. In fact, upon arrival she begins the visit by proudly declaring the oversized chair she is lounging in (due to a recent knee replacement surgery) was bought from GRACEful Buys Grapevine, also known as GBG, and was reupholstered with fabric from Hobby Lobby. She then points out the vast majority of her living room and kitchen furniture in sight was also bought at GBG and covered with fabric she found mostly in Atlanta.
Her favored discovery of GBG happened thanks to her decorator friend who called up Tannie saying she must come at once to see the gorgeous prints found there. Tannie, having the distinguished eye and taste that she does, cannot be told by someone else what she likes, but must see for herself. Her friend was spot-on with her suggestion, and Tannie has been a devoted GBG customer ever since!
Not one to let a knee replacement slow her down, Tannie pulled herself out of her oversized chair (declining assistance) and began a tour of her beloved haven, sharing stories and pointing out cherished items found on her visits to GBG. Her original estimate that 80% of her décor originated from GBG almost seemed on the low side as she went from room to room sharing fond recollections, even revealing more GBG buys kept out of sight, stored neatly within drawers, cabinets and closets. Tannie jokes that she and her friends refer to her hidden treasure troves as “Tannie’s Store,” where there is always a beautiful piece for whatever is needed – a friend needing to borrow, a special or seasonal occasion, even gifts lovingly chosen to bless her loved ones with.
Everything from furniture, prints, candelabras, vases, urns, mirrored trays, picture frames, even tapestries have found their way from our store into a picture perfect spot in her home. Our hostess explains that the items may have a little dirt or grime, but once she sees it, she sees the potential of the piece after a nice polish. “There is no trash,” she says. And if you have the experience and knack that Tannie exhibits, you would find a little spray paint will go a long way when more than a polish is needed. She is a self-proclaimed spray paint queen, able to transform a ho-hum item into something that looks as if hundreds of dollars were spent at a high-end furniture store or boutique. She also discloses another of her tips – she purchases greenery and silks for floral arrangements only at GRACEful Buys!
Friends of Tannie often ask how it is that she always is able to spot these gems. She advises that you must look up and down – floor to ceiling – in the store, not just at eye level. And yes, you do have to go back again and again as our inventory has a high rotation. But that is how she tracks down her treasures, and Tannie does not mind one bit repeated visits to our store as it is so much more than shopping to her. She also explains, “if it is meant for you, you will find it.”
Tannie fondly recounts some of the many experiences she has had in GBG. Oftentimes she has witnessed an individual without the funds needed to complete a purchase, when another shopper – a stranger – offers to help with the purchase. She has had many instances where she was able to bless another shopper herself. She thanks God that He placed her in a position to help another person. As a woman with a good eye for a good find, Tannie regularly catches other shoppers taking notice of the items in her basket, she will then allow people to shop out of her cart! That’s when you know you have good taste! And again she is grateful and blessed to show kindness.
“I am passionate about the fact that there is a place people can go to shop, and not just enjoy finding good buys but also enjoy fellowship. You come out refreshed, more compassionate and feel like someone cares as you go out from there.”
A frequent gathering place for company, out-of-town visitors and parties (and who wouldn’t want company when your home looks like this!), Tannie constantly has guests asking where she shops. She loves bragging on GRACEful Buys, sharing her “go-to” with people who have never heard of our store. Out-of-towners visiting always get a trip to GBG with Tannie; she gets a kick out of her returning visitors that request a stop at GBG every time they are in the area.
It was a particularly happy day when Tannie came across her exact pattern of wedding china at GRACEful Buys Euless. Of course she snatched up every piece. It’s times like these that she feels God’s sweet ways of delighting her – the surprise of finding the wedding china she chose over 34 years ago, the instrumental ways the Lord allows individuals to lend a helping hand and others to witness those situations, the dear friendships built among shoppers and store staff – GRACEful Buys is SO much more than just a retail store. Tannie cannot say enough wonderful things about the relationships she has built with GRACEful Buys team members, particularly her admiration for GBG Store Manager, Terri Haun. Yes, it is always a happy day when Tannie stops into GRACEful Buys, and she teases it’s a happy day for her husband the rare times she leaves without making a purchase – pat on the back deserved!
We are delighted to announce our Second Quarter MVP is GRACE Food Pantry Assistant Manager, Keith Hills! Keith was nominated based on exceptional customer service, outstanding attitude, excellence in Mission, and interdepartmental relations and teamwork.
He is a spot-on example of the GRACE Mission and Core Values. When you take notice of Keith in action you immediately see the values of compassion, respect, excellence, service and stewardship.
His priority is customer service, making sure our clients are taken care of. However, he also makes sure just about everyone he encounters is taken care of. He jumps in and lends a helping hand when he sees help is needed – before you can even ask for help.
The commitment he shows to not only his work, but to his colleagues, our clients, volunteers and donors, is commendable. Keith always makes certain people are just taken care of. He always has such wise, faith-filled words to offer and a smile to light up the room.
Keith Hills is a wonderful servant leader and what a blessing it is to have him on our GRACE Team. Keith is one of everyone’s favorite people; when you meet him you immediately understand why. Congratulations to you, Keith, on this much deserved recognition!
Each month, the GRACE staff meets to share a time of fellowship and catch up with everything that is going on around the agency. One of the last items on each month’s agenda is a time to share “kudos”… a verbal “pat on the back” for a job well done or a “thank you” for going above and beyond the call of duty.
We’re very proud of the people who work within these walls and have decided to share with everyone the comments made each month. We hope you enjoy getting a peek inside!
Kudos given during the month of June include:
Jana McGlone to Rusty Thigpen
Jamé Scott to Teresa Williamson and Shonda Schaefer
Kathy Mize to Pam Basiloy, Dina Pesina, Teresa Williamson and Melissa Simpkins
Lara Hohweiler to all staff who volunteered at FÜDTRUKY
For many people, their first introduction to GRACE was at Donation Station (DS). On any given day, more than a hundred donors drive through with donations of clothing, housewares and other items for GRACE clients. We are extremely proud of our hardworking and dedicated team members at DS.
Donation Station is also a popular location for volunteers, especially corporate volunteers and youth groups. Plus, we are looking to grow our GRACE family with staff positions open at DS and GRACEful Buys!
Meet the Huge Need for Volunteers
We are currently offering DOUBLE service hours credit with a minimum of four hours at Donation Station.
The multitudes of items we receive require stewardship, strategy, and elbow grease to ensure the products are directed where they will be most useful. Businesses, Church congregations and civic groups find great satisfaction after volunteering at Donation Station, and many individuals are needed to support our resale staff on a weekly or part-time basis.
No retail experience is required to volunteer, and all volunteers will receive ample training. If you’re interested in learning more, contact our Development and Volunteer Coordinator, Sarah Armand.
HOW YOU CAN DO EVEN MORE
Shop at Our Stores
Providing continual care rests much on the success of our resale operations. The GRACE family is encouraged to shop at these treasure troves for the best deals on furniture, clothing, home goods and more.
Our Donation Station facility houses items such as clothing, housewares, linens, toys and books given by the community to provide assistance to those in the midst of job loss, illness or other emergency.
Your item donations give hope when families wonder how they’ll be able to afford back-to-school clothes, work boots or interview attire. The items also supply our Transitional Housing program with goods on hand for those seeking shelter.
Many donations are also funneled into our resale operations, which generate revenue to continue programs such as our Community Clinic and Food Pantry.
We have been entrusted by the community to meet the ranging needs of those facing crisis—from shelter to food, to the clothes on their back. There would be no way we could offer unique support without the advocacy of our community. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
Mothers are typically tremendously proud of their sons, and the mothers of the young men from the Young Men’s Service League Southlake Chapter should be especially proud. As soon as these boy read our Food Pantry Red Letter Alert, they felt compelled to spring into action.
The boys immediately organized not one, but two, food donation drives! 123 of the organization’s members participated in the first drive by bringing food and medicine contributions.
Their upcoming drive scheduled for July 10th already has over 90 members signed-up! Their two SUV’s were filled to the brim when they showed up to help at last Friday’s Grocery Giveaway. No telling how many SUV’s they will fill this next time!
YMSL members created a sign-up genius with items from our Pantry Needs List to make sure they collected the most critical items. Instead of having each individual drop the items off themself at The Food Pantry, the boys set-up a home base as one convenient drop-off location. They went above and beyond in making certain convenience would ensure the most effective and successful effort.
“We…appreciate the opportunities that GRACE creates that allows our young men to serve the community like Donation Station, Feed our Kids, and GRACEful Buys.”
While most teenage boys are constantly thinking of their own incessant appetites, these guys are working hard and making a difference to impact the epidemic of hunger in their community. YMSL Southlake’s support of Feed Our Kids and Grocery Giveaway this summer has been a rewarding service opportunity for both the young men and their mothers. GRACE is beyond grateful for the rewards we reap from the service of these exceptional young men!
